Hi everyone I am looking to build a Lotus Seven replica with either a Rover 3.5 V8 or a Toyota 1UZFE V8 motor. I am basing my design basically around Chris Gibb's book with the exception of motor and gearbox (ie predominantly Ford Sierra running gear). I am wondering what process I need to follow to ensure a minimal amount of difficulty in this build? Do I need to do a design approval, or can I get agreement from a certifier that this will be Ok. Also, am I allowed to weld my own chassis. I have done about 10 yrs of hobby mig welding.

Hi Nigel
The first thing I recommend you do, is to get yourself a copy of the Hobby Car Technical Manual, available through the New Zealand Hot Rod Association. This book contains all the information you will require to submit your design to the TAC for approval, as well as providing a huge source of information and guidance on building your car.
It is highly recommended (but not compulsory) that you do submit your chassis design to the TAC prior to commencing the build, as any issues which may be raised will likely be much harder to fix once the car has been completed.
If you are going to build a custom made independent front suspension (I.E. custom made suspension A arms), these must be approved by the TAC.
You can do your own welding, however there are certain criteria which need to be met. All of these criteria are detailed in the Hobby car technical manual.
I hope this helps, and good luck with your project.
