I have just been given a 1937 Ford CX. It has been unregistered for some time. I have the original registration plate and also have the chassis number. The previous family who had the car are going to see if they still have any paperwork for the car, but they can't be certain. My plan is to do some careful modifications (front/rear ends, engine & transmission), so do I wait and do this as part of the compliance process, or do it now and change as required?
Cheers

Hi Garry,
You can't register a car without getting a WOF first.
So gather all the history and documentation that you can, and get a document trail that links you via receipts to the last registered owner.
This will help you when it comes to recompliance time.
As I suspect you're unlikely to restore it to standard roadworthy condition, Reg + WOF it, and then modify it, then your only real option is to go through Reg + WOF after your modifications are done.
That being the case typically the steps are 1) Have a new VIN attached to the vehicle if the registration history is so old as to be vanished entirely (contact a VTNZ etc, with the licence plate number to find out that). 2) Have the car LVV certified 3) Have the car complied (Reg + WOF) 4) Spend the rest of your life and money tinkering.
