No, race-type seats are not required. You may create your own, assuming they meet the requirements. It may pay to get a copy of the NZ Car Construction Manual, if you've not got one, as it will answer plenty of questions for you. The old Hobby car manual? I have one of those. Only specifies that it needs to be built to a similar standard as a OEM seat. So I can build a seat as per original Buick (which is a fixed back attached to both sides of the body) but a bit heavier engineered?

Yes, you can build your own seat, however, the wording states that for harnesses it requires headrests. You'd likely attach the harnesses to a harness bar that runs behind the seat.
Just thinking more on it, would your seats be low enough that a lap and diagonal belt may work? This could be done in a similar way to many Cobras etc, where the shoulder belt comes from the inside of the vehicle, as the outside edges are too low. Just a thought, that would mean you don't need headrests.

I was initially going to go that way, and wanted to do it that way but my bodyline is 100mm or so lower than my shoulder. But if that's acceptable I'll build a door post and attach to that. Maybe some photos might help?
