Hi can i cut and weld a steering shaft? I have a pickup"im building" with hq subframe and hq column, The shaft i want to use is vl commodore But its about 80 mm too short? can i cut and weld it? get it crack tested etc? The rest of it will be bolt in not using the hq shaft as it has fabric coupling that im not happy with using Thanks David

I have just had to remove my cut pinned and welded NDT tested steering shaft and replace it with a one piece splined shaft for certification.Cost a lot.

Thats right atwuck, it can't be done, accept for special circumstances where there is no other practical alternative.
It's really clear in the NZ Hobby Car Technical Manual (Chapter seven, 7.11.4) that welding a steering shaft is a no-go, unless it's been individually approved, in writing by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).
In 'the old days' splining was expensive and very few people in NZ were equipped to do it. Now however, most decent machine shops have a splining machine, and the cost is comparatively low. Also the availability of good quality aftermarket steering universals has made this a bit of a no-brainer.
