Hey Guys Just wanting a bit of clarification on the subject of after market belts..
I have an old '69 Beetle which has Retractable front and lap belts rear using the factory seat belt anchor point.
As the belts are possibly 50 years old this year I would like to replace them as a precautionary safety measure.
I have found a new aftermarket set from an Australian VW parts distributor.
Using the factory anchor points, do the belts need to meet any particular standard? The existing belts have no distinguishable tags or markings.
The new belts have E1 markings and meet all Australian standards..
MAny thanks in advance Slim

Something tells me they were possibly only fitted with static front belts and no rear belts, but I may be wrong. Seatbelts do need to comply with one or more of the approved standards on Schedule 2 of the Land Transport Rule 32011: Seatbelts and Seatbelt Anchorages 2001 (page 39), www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/resources/rules/docs/seatbelts-and-seatbelt-anchorages-2002-as-at-1-december-2016.pdfThey will not need certification provided they are the correct type fitted to unmodified OE seatbelt anchorages. (a retractable belt on anchorages designed for a static belt would probably not comply) Please note that there are some belts that are the subject of safety alerts. lvvta.org.nz/documents/safety_alerts/LVVTA_Safety_Alert_10-2018_Changzhou_BWD_BVL_Seatbelt_failures.pdflvvta.org.nz/documents/safety_alerts/LVVTA_Safety_Alert_02-2019_-_APV_Seatbelt_Bolt_Recall.pdf

Any help would be appreciated thanks Hi Raddodge, Anchorages added in 1997 require certification as only modifications that were completed prior to 1st Jan 1992 were able to be included on a declaration, however, if you go to a certifier they may be able to identify an alternative solution for your upper anchorage that still meet LVVTA requirements and are not overly complicated. Let me know if you need a certifiers name and contact detaiks. Replacement seatbelts in a vehicle first registered anywhere between 1st January 1955 and 31st October 1979 and first registered in NZ before 1 January 1991, must be the static lap-and-diagonal type. There is an allowance to retain original equipment (OE) seatbelts, but they must be the OE belt in the vehicle and meet requirements for condition. noting - an aftermarket remake of the OE belt is not an OE belt. There is also the ability to apply for an upper anchorage seatbelt exemption, but this needs to be applied for through a certifier and considered by the Technical Working Group of the LVVTA. Hopefully that answers your question. Cheers Chris

Thanks sorted ended up taking 160 mm bar tapped for seat belt ground and slid up in piller then plug welded. Note lvvta required spot welds no further than 35 mm apart 100 mm either side of seat belt hole on pillar edges for future readers
