Hi I was wondering whether there's any guidelines on modifying the frame between my headlights (ie where my bonnet currently latches)? Am I allowed to cut this out, and replace it with a box section that will be bolted in? I'm asking because I want to do an over-the-radiator intake, but there's not enough room currently. I want to tilt the radiator back slightly and cut out that piece of frame, and replace it with a box section (ideally aluminuim or alloy to reduce the weight, hence asking if I can bolt it in instead of welding it). My bonnet latch is not an issue because I'll be using bonnet pins as a dedicated motorsport vehicle. I've searched a bit but couldn't find anything. I did also ask a certifier here in Wellington, but it wasn't their area of expertise so they weren't really sure. Crude MS Paint drawing attached for clarity. cheers Brian Attachments:

I need the vehicle model and year to give you an accurate answer.
In general, for an older vehicle not designed with frontal impact in mind, the modification needs to be structurally sound and present no danger to pedestrians (no sharp edges etc. this applies to the bonnet pins too).
For more modern cars with airbags and deformable front ends, you need to be a bit more careful. You cannot remove any structural parts or alter areas intended to crush on impact or close to any frontal impact sensors. If you do alter any other parts you need to retain the same strength as the vehicle had before.

Thanks Dan. It's a '97 VS Commodore. Will have an MSNZ authority card and be certed for airbag removal, so no sensors etc.

In that case, with authority card it will be ok to do the modifications.
