Looking at doing custom tail lights for my ute using LED's, I understand the biggest issue is over intensity and that they would need to be approved by LVVTA. What sort of timeframe and cost is involved with this process?

Callum Hi there First I should point out that unless your vehicle has other mods which require certification, the modified tail lights won't actually need certifying, they must only meet the WOF in-service requirements as set out in the VIRM. If you have to have your vehicle certified for other mods, that's when the requirements for your modified lights will have to be met. The main problem is the lens or cover. The best bet is to try and find an alternative lens which already meets one of the lighting standards (see table 17.2 in the NZ Hobby Car Technical Manual) and use that, with your LED's in behind. This would still need to be approved by the TAC, and may also require reports from a photometric testing laboratory. The TAC approval process can usually be completed within one month, however this is dependent on the application arriving near to a TAC meeting, and providing the TAC doesn't require any further information. You'll need to contact a photometric laboratory to get an idea of the cost. If you need any further details on making your TAC application, feel free to contact me directly - (04) 4774372 Justin

Definitely needing cert for other mods, doing a lot of other work as well. I think it may just be easier and cheaper to buy some LED strip lights from Hella. Very hard to find ones that aren't red or orange (was looking for a tinted type of lense to blend into the paint) but as I expected the time and cost is unlikely to be worth it. I suppose the other option is to mount appropriate bulb housings behind the lenses that I want (presuming I can find them tinted and standards approved)and then look at changing them after the vehicle is certified as then only in service requirements apply. As the entire tail light area is custom I will just need to ensure that they fit the same before I get the body mods finished. Thanks for your help.
