Hi,
My question has been partly answered in other threads but I'm getting mixed messages and would like to get confirmation of my particular situation from someone in the know.
I have a 1992 Leitch Supersprint (Lotus 7 style car) that runs 13' wheels, however it has 14x7 listed on the cert plate. My interpretation of the paperwork that came with the car is that it originally had 13' wheels but a change was made to 14's and a new cert plate obtained after the car failed a WOF. The original wheels were put back on before sale and I have been using the car blissfully unaware that it was a cert issue and the car likely uninsured because of it!
I would like to keep the 13's on my car rather than fork out for 14's. As the car was originally designed for 13' wheels, as was it's Escort running gear, I thought that it would be as simple as getting a certifier to eyeball the car and confirm that the wheels don't foul the bodywork or make the car sit excessively low etc and then send off for a new plate. I've been told though that there is no such thing as a partial recert and that I'll be up for a full recert, which seems to run counter to common sense and to some of the answers on this forum.
My current 185/70/13 tyres have a diameter of 0.04cm less than a 195/60/14 tyre and a rolling radius only 0.13cm smaller. Figures are approximate and taken from www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual-tyre-size-calculator I have chosen 195 partly because it suits my calculations but also because it is the narrowest tyre I'd be comfortable putting on the 7' rim and at 205 I think the car will be over-tyred.
Are you able to tell me what the situation actually is? Many thanks for any help you can give me.
Cheers,
Paul.
