Hi, I have modified my Diesel Landcruiser so that it can run on Vegatible Oil or Diesel. The original fuel tank has the veg oil in it, I have a 2nd tank that has diesel in it. The modification includes some additional fuel piping, a coolant heated heat exchanger to heat the veg oil and 2 solenoid valves to control what fuel is being used. It has a control system that is used to manage what fuel is being used and to flush the veg oil out with diesel before the engine is shut down.
The question is, does my mod need to be certified as I have been given 2 different answers so far. A WOF testing station says yes it does, whereas a vehicle certifier says no it doesn't as there are no regulations that cover this type of fuel.
Obviously the installation would need to be installed in a secure manner and be of good workmanship with no leaks and using materials that are fit for the purpose.
I would have thought it doesn't as the alternative fuel is a food product and is less hazadous than the diesel that the vehicle originally ran on. If it is said that it does need to be certified as the fuel system has been modified then this would imply that if someone fitted an additional fuel filter in their fuel line for added protection then this would need certification.
What are your thoughts.
Thank you Regards Tim

Hi Tim
As far as I can determine the use of vegetable oil as a fuel does not require certification but the installation of the second fuel tank for the Diesel fuel and the fuel lines will require Low Volume Vehicle Certification.

Hi Kendall, Thanks for the reply, am I correct in thinking that you are saying that a vehicle certifier would do this as opposed to an alternative fuels certifier. Presumably they would just document the installation along with any other modifications and determine that it had been installed in a safe manner and would not create a hazard.
Thank you Regards Tim

Hi Tim
Yes one of our Low Volume Vehicle Certifiers would inspect the installation and certify it as being safe. Part of his inspection would also include any other modifications present on the vehicle. Once the inspection has been completed and passed as safe a Certification plate will be manufactured and attached to your vehicle.
