Hi Team
Is a side intrusion bar/beam in the door of a fibreglass car (33 Ford Coupe) a requirement and what specs are required? I couldn't find anything in the Technical Manual. Have I missed it?
Cheers

Hi there
No, you haven't missed it. There are no specific side impact 'Land Transport Rules' at this stage, so there are no alternative requirements for a scratch-built vehicle. It is likely the government will introduce a side impact rule at some point in the future, which will mean we will have to introduce a low volume vehicle Standard at that time.
The reality is however, that it is common for side impact style bars to be fitted inside a fibreglass door, as this is an excellent method of adding structural strength to the door (see HCTM 13.20, Body and door structure strength requirements), as it links the door hinges to the door catch assembly, to comply with HCTM 13.11 General door retention system requirements.
It's also a proven safety feature in both high and low volume vehicles, and many builders feel this is well worth incorporating into a vehicles construction.
I hope this helps
Justin
