Hi Coopdevil.
This isn't something LVVTA can determine. As you have no proof of previous registration, you'll need to get in contact with NZTA, to have them try to locate any history that may be attached to the number plate you have. The more evidence you can supply, the better your chances. Try Fiona on (04)894 5075.
Good luck.

I have just bought a Ford Pop with orignal chassis, body, guards and door. Torana diff, Viva front end? There has been some mods to fit a V6 but the job is no where complete. I am waiting for my Hobby Car Manual to arrive. Whats your thoughts on this being scratch built or modified. If I put a V8 in would that make any difference. Probably have to change the front end and maybe mod the chassis to carry the 8?

Interesting question by coopdevil. I am in a similar situation regarding body and chassis mods. I am a bit confused by the answer though. If you can prove ownership, registration etc.. does that mean it can be classed as modified original, and not scratch built, even though it has had some body and chassis mods? I thought the class was determined by LVVTA and not NZTA. I realise the regulations on this are in the process of review. Can you clarify please?

Hi mcmoo If your Pop has all of the original body, and all of the original chassis, then it's a 'modified production vehicle', and not a scratch-built. The engine and drive-train has no bearing on this. You can change up to 40% of the original chassis rails and cross-members before it becomes a scratch-built; the fitting of a different front suspension also has no bearing on this. LVVTA are currently involved in discussions over the scratch-built definition which we hope will be updated in the near future. I hope this helps! Justin

Hi jimbo coopdevil's 'A' has it's original body and chassis, and so this can NOT be a scratch-built. This is why it is important that the vehicle has it's original identity verified. The Vintage Car Club of NZ may be able to help you with this process. The scratch-built definition is a definition contained within the NZ Land Transport Rules. As I said in the previous post, we are currently in the process of updating the definition; this will make it much easier to understand and apply. If you'd like to discuss, feel free to contact me at on 04 238 4343. Justin
