Hi,
A quick question about converting a power steering rack to manual. The LVV guide states that you need to be able to provide an invoice of professional conversion. If I converted the rack myself, to a professional standard, using a widely accepted method, and was able to provide photo's etc of the conversion - would this get certified?
Can provide a link to method if needed - it's not the dodgy loop method - but a full power steering rack conversion.
Regards Colin Findlay

Also keen to know if replacement of an existing pulley powered PS pump with an electric one would require LVV certification? I can't find a link to the actual LVVTA documents (190-00)

Hi Colin
Regarding the power steering to manual rack conversion. You could carry out the modification yourself but you would have to get a steering repair/overhaul specialist to inspect the rack/pinion and confirm in writing that the modification has been carried out as per the following requirements -
"In a rack and pinion, the torsion bar must be removed and replaced or pinned, for positive engagement. This eliminates reverse feedback from the wheels back up to the steering wheel, and improves steering feel and feedback.
The steering rack or box must also be stripped of all internal power steering seals and parts not required for the rack or box operation in manual configuration, or which may cause resistance or restriction.
All components within the rack and pinion or box should be lubricated in the same way in which a manual rack or box is lubricated, using appropriate grease on the shaft/bushings/bearings and pinion in a steering rack, and a steering box should use heavy-weight oil.
This work should be carried out by a steering specialist, with a copy of the invoice provided to the LVV Certifier".
Fitting of an electric power steering pump will require LVV certification.
