I have an older 1986 Toyota HiAce camper that i want to add a small 2 person bench in the rear , do these need lap & diagonals or just lap belts ? cheers Hiya Adogg It depends when the vehicle was converted to a camper Campers manufactured prior to 1 October 2003 or motor vehicles converted to campers prior to 1 October 2003 must have seatbelts fitted that are appropriate for the class of vehicle in which the vehicle was registered when it was registered as a camper. Campers manufactured from 1 October 2003 or motor vehicles converted to campers from 1 October 2003 must be fitted with the following seatbelts and notice: a) front seating positions: must be fitted with retractable seatbelts b) rear seating positions: as many or more lap or lap-and-diagonal seatbelts as there are sleeping berths minus the number of front seating positions. c) a notice must be displayed in a prominent location that recommends, on safety grounds, that when the vehicle is travelling, passengers use seats that are fitted with seatbelts, and that advises passengers that it is compulsory to wear fitted seatbelts. Of course the anchorages will need to be certified, also it might pay to discuss with your certifier which way will the seats face, as there are extra complexities for interior impact that need to be considered. Cheers Chris

i would say it was done in the late 80`s or when it was new looks like a ex Britz or whoever was running rentals back then its in white with the distinctive blue & green stripes down the sides , definitely before 1995 as the old fella i got it from had owned it since then where do i find the pre 2003 legislation for MB class, carjam says its a "motor caravan" that "seats 2" even though it has a front bench with 3 belted positions am i right in thinking that this doesnt have to have any belted rear seats?

Can you confirm the year of manufacturer and the date the van was first registered in NZ. Thanks Chris

Hi Chris , first reg 3/86, MK7997 Hi Adogg From the information provided, any rear seating positions only require a lap belt. Cheers Chris
