Hi all,
Im looking for a little guidence when it comes to an IRS conversion.
This is in regards to an old air cooled VW Beetle.
The old VW Beetles were produced with basically 2 types of rear suspension - ‘swing axle’ and ‘independent rear suspension (IRS)’
These two types can be seen here
For all intents and purposes, the only physical difference between the two types of floor pans is the bracket that the trailing arm bolts into on the IRS pan.
The other components required in the conversion are all factory VW parts taken from the IRS equipped Beetle (or Type 3), which can be swapped out using all factory mounts and fixings.
The brackets required for the trailing arms can be purchased readily from most VW parts stores, and are marketed by a major US manufacturer for aftermarket VW parts (EMPI)
These mounts are welded to the rear torsion housing by cutting a small amount of metal out of the frame horns, which these brackets replace when welded in place with a jig.
Here is where i need some guidance..
Reading though Chapter 6 of the LVVT manual..
6.26.2 states that welding of a rear suspension cross member needs to be carried out in accordance with welding requirements for non-critical components (Chapter 18.7 & 18.8)
6.26.3 states that welding of a custom component within a custom independent rear suspension assembly needs to be carried out in accordance with welding requirements for critical components (Chapter 18.9)
Given the nature of this conversion using mostly factory parts, can you please advise if the brackets that are to be welded in fall under 6.26.2 or 6.26.3?
Lastly, do you know of, or can you see any issues with this conversion being complied, using the factory parts along with the conversion brackets?
I look forward to your thoughts
Many thanks in advance!
